Ion Exchange as a water softening

Application of ion exchangers as a water softener is a common function and are used very widely in industries that require soft water for boiler process and raw materials. Standard water-level to its sadahan ( hardness) due to high content of calcium and magnesium should be lowered by replacing it with a load of sodium ions contained in the resin.

Ion exchange process continues to run until equilibrium is reached and saturated and unsaturated resin condition after the immediate re-generation by washing with water containing high NaCl salt. Soft water is used for boiler feed water to prevent precipitation ( scaling) in both the plumbing and the boiler system in the cooling system.

As the purification media

In the case of the use of ion exchange media such as a purifier to remove toxic materials carried by a particular fluid, then the ion exchanger can take heavy metal ions such as Cadmium, Lead and Copper and replacing them with sodium ions and potassium salts. There are other types of ion exchange resins which can filter raw water organic contaminants by adding activated carbon in the ion exchange column.

Selection of type of resin will determine the function of ion exchange on which the plant uses as a water softening, media filtration as certain heavy metals as well as the fluid minerals in the raw water filter.
